David Beckham

Fabio Capello believes David Beckham still has much to offer the England team after including the midfielder in his provisional squad to play France next week.

Beckham will be hopeful of winning his 100th cap in Paris on Wednesday, while Arsenal's Theo Walcott and Middlesbrough's central defender David Wheater have also been called up to the squad.

Capello had sent his number two Franco Baldini to the USA to watch Beckham in action in a pre-season friendly, and also spoke to his coach at Los Angeles Galaxy, Ruud Gullit.

The England manager said: "I always said that when David Beckham was fit he could be in the squad.

"I have had good reports on him from Franco Baldini, who watched him on Saturday night, and also from his club. I know a lot about David Beckham and what he can offer the team."

Capello said the fact England under-21s have a friendly rather than competitive game next week allowed him to pick Walcott, 19, and Wheater, 21.

He added: "Theo Walcott and David Wheater are two good young players who have done very well for the Under-21s this season and when I have seen them play for their clubs.

"Stuart Pearce has given me excellent recommendations on both players. Next week Stuart has a friendly match so it is a good opportunity for us to consider some of the younger players for the senior squad."

Capello also made special mention of Michael Owen and Joe Cole in matches he was watched this week.

"I saw Michael Owen play for Newcastle on Monday at Birmingham," said the Italian. "I felt he looked sharp, very alive and it was good to see him scoring.

"I should also mention Joe Cole who I thought was excellent last night for Chelsea in a very exciting game. He had a massive impact."

Portsmouth striker Jermain Defoe has also been included while Chelsea pair John Terry and Frank Lampard, who missed Capello's first game in charge due to injury, are also in.

Those named in Capello's first 30-man squad in January who miss out this time are Micah Richards and Curtis Davies, both injured, as well as Ledley King, Nicky Shorey, Michael Carrick and Emile Heskey.

Capello has not named his captain against France - he has said he wants to try different plays for deciding on a permanent choice. Steven Gerrard had the armband against Switzerland last month and Terry or Rio Ferdinand are the favourites for this game.

Most of the focus will be on Beckham though and the 32-year-old has convinced Capello that he is fit enough after several pre-season games with Los Angeles Galaxy.

It also seems very unlikely that Capello will not keep him in his thinned-down 23-man squad that he will confirm on Saturday evening.

Walcott's inclusion was also anticipated as the 19-year-old's recent performances for Arsenal, including a notable cameo against AC Milan, were known to have caught Capello's eye.

Ronaldinho.

Barcelona star Ronaldinho has hit back at his critics, vowing: "They will not destroy me."

Ronaldinho, who has been dogged by injuries this campaign, has seemed a shadow of his former self over the past year.

And discontent with the Brazil international reached a peak on Monday when a scan revealed that he is not suffering from any injury, despite his claims to the contrary.

An official club statement on Monday afternoon confirmed that no evidence of injury could be found by Barcelona's medical staff, but Ronaldinho has slammed reports doubting his commitment to the Catalan giants.

"Apparently there are jealous people who want to destroy me with these rumours," Ronaldinho told Vanity Fair.

"They won't do it. Nobody destroys Ronaldinho.

"No critic in the world can take away my spirit.

"I am so motivated, more than I have been for a long time. Criticism encourages me to be better."

Ronaldinho has played just seven full games in 28 league fixtures so far this season, and has been repeatedly linked with a move away from the Nou Camp - with AC Milan and Chelsea among several clubs waiting to snap him up.

But the 27-year-old has rubbished rumours that he wants to leave Barcelona, vowing to recover his form and fitness to lead them to the Primera Liga crown.

"Barcelona can only win great titles with a strong Ronaldinho," the former World player of the year continued.

"Without titles life is boring, and if you don't play, it's very very frustrating. You can't continue like that.

"This year I want to be a champion with Barcelona, whatever it costs.

"I have a stunning future with this club. The lads are my family. At Barca I am as happy as I was the first day.

"I want to stay here and I will do everything possible to be the best again."

Coach Frank Rijkaard omitted the Brazilian from Thursday's Copa del Rey semi-final return leg at Valencia, saying he was not fit for the tie.

"(Wednesday) was the first day (Ronaldinho) has trained with the team for several days," Rijkaard told club website www.fcbarcelona.cat.

"He wanted to play but we left him out as a precautionary measure.

Berlusconi offers Ronaldo hope

AC Milan president Silvio Berlusconi has revealed Ronaldo will be offered a new contract if the 31-year-old shows the will to return from a career-threatening knee injury.

The Brazilian's contract is due to expire in June, but he is expected to be sidelined until November after undergoing surgery on ruptured knee ligaments in Paris last month.

"I think Ronaldo will remain with us, and if he wants, he can still be a key player," Berlusconi told Sky Italia.

"He has already had a knee injury like this and been able to recover.

"If he still wants it he can, for he is very young at 31, and we have (Paolo) Maldini who will be 40 who is an example for us.

Davey gears up for Blues

Barnsley boss Simon Davey turned his attention to the weekend's glamour FA Cup quarter-final with Chelsea after securing a 1-1 draw at Blackpool.

Jamal Campbell-Ryce struck in first-half injury time as the struggling Tykes claimed a Coca-Cola Championship point after Gary Taylor-Fletcher's opener.

Davey was pleased with the performance and put it down to his players trying to impress ahead of the Stamford Bridge tie.

"I put out a side to get a result and I am happy with that," Davey said.

"Blackpool played some good football in the first half but we came back strongly and the players showed a great deal of character.

"We have had three draws on the trot and over that time my players have had the chance to stake a claim for the match at Chelsea on Saturday.

"They will have their day off and I will be sitting down to reflect about the team I will choose for that game.

"They all want to play against the Lampards and Drogbas and I'm sure there are one or two players who came back in contention tonight like (Sam) Togwell and (Kayode) Odejayi, who will be in with a chance."

Blackpool dominated the first half with Taylor-Fletcher threatening several times.

The Seasiders forward found the net in the 20th minute when the striker headed home - and his side looked set to extend their lead as they continued to force the pace.

But the visitors pulled level with the half drawing to a close, Campbell-Ryce latching on to Odejayi's pass to score his second goal of the season.

Blackpool boss Simon Grayson said: "It was a decent game, we started well and on another day we might have taken all three points.

"We looked a few times as if we might get that second goal and I'm sure we would have won the game if we'd managed that but it never quite happened for us.

"The players worked hard and showed some good quality at times but it wasn't quite enough.

"The expectations have gone up and possibly it's the most decent run we've been on, but Barnsley are a good side and you don't just have to turn up to beat them."

In League One, Doncaster striker Paul Heffernan netted in the third minute to give his side a 1-0 win over FA Cup quarter-finalists Bristol Rovers at the Memorial Stadium.

The result means Doncaster leapfrog Carlisle, who defeated Nottingham Forest on Monday night, into the second automatic promotion place.

Andrew Crofts (four, 76) scored twice for Gillingham - but his side remain in trouble in the relegation zone after a 4-2 away defeat to Brighton.

The Gills were reduced to nine men after Sean Clohessy and Garry Richards were sent off - while Nicky Forster (23), Adam El-Abd (43), Tommy Elphick (45) and Jake Robinson (78) found the net for the home side.

Elsewhere, Michael Mackay (74) gave Hartlepool a 1-0 win over Oldham - and Swindon were reduced to nine men but held on to claim a 3-2 win over Huddersfield at the County Ground.

A fourth-minute strike from Billy Paynter and two from Craig Easton (23, 31) put the Robins in control - but two penalties from Phil Jevons (39, 77) pulled the visitors back into contention.

Lee Peacock and Paynter were both sent off, but Swindon held on.

In League Two, Peterborough claimed a 2-0 win over a Barnet side reduced to 10 men at Underhill.

Dean Keates (32) and Jamie Day (90) scored for Posh, while Jason Puncheon was sent off in the 34th minute.

Darlington striker Pawel Abbott scored in the 27th minute to give his side a 1-0 home win over Chester which kept the pressure up on the top two.

Bury boosted their hopes of avoiding relegation with a 4-1 thrashing of Brentford at Griffin Park.

Andy Bishop (37,83) scored twice, and Nicky Adams (13) and Glynn Hurst (15) grabbed a goal each for the Shakers - while Glenn Poole converted a 56th-minute penalty for the home side.

Series win critical to build team, says Dhoni

ndian captain MS Dhoni Tuesday said the Commonwealth Bank tri-series win was "important because this is the building stage of my team".

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Dhoni said he was proud of the way his team had performed in "the toughest conditions and against the toughest team in the world"."It can't get better than this. And beating Australia in two consecutive finals was a great feeling.""We played well throughout the series, but the important thing was that we improved as a unit," he added. The Indian skipper was most happy with the batsmen coming to the party at the right time."The batting came through at the right time. Sachin gave us the start wen we needed it the most."Asked about today's target, which seemed a bit short at the end of the Indian batting, he said: "There was some areas of concern in the Australian batting and we knew that they would have to score as much as we scored."He credited Praveen Kumar for some excellent bowling. The bowler's four-wicket haul earned him the Man of the Match award."Praveen looks quite deceptive. He's a skiddy customer and conditions like this it really helps him," he said.

england

England have made two changes to their line-up for the opening Test against New Zealand as they attempt to bounce back from their pre-Christmas defeat in Sri Lanka.

The tourists made the unexpected decision to announce their team a day before the Test starts at Seddon Park on Wednesday and confirmed wayward spearhead Steve Harmison would keep his place in the attack.

Andrew Strauss returns to the line-up to bat at number three for the first time in his Test career and replaces Ravi Bopara, who was dropped from the Test squad for New Zealand after scoring only 42 runs in three Tests in Sri Lanka.

New wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose is also poised to make his debut as a replacement for Matt Prior, who was also dropped after the Sri Lanka tour.

Otherwise the England line-up is as expected and Harmison, Matthew Hoggard and Ryan Sidebottom, who has recovered from a right hamstring strain, will form their seam attack with Monty Panesar providing the spin option.

England team for first Test against New Zealand: Michael Vaughan (Yorkshire, captain), Alistair Cook (Essex), Andrew Strauss (Middlesex), Kevin Pietersen (Hampshire), Ian Bell (Warwickshire), Paul Collingwood (Durham), Tim Ambrose (Warwickshire, wicketkeeper), Ryan Sidebottom (Nottinghamshire), Matthew Hoggard (Yorkshire), Steve Harmison (Durham), Monty Panesar (Northamptonshire).

Milan test holds no fears for Fabregas

Arsenal held onto top spot in the Barclays Premier League on Saturday by virtue of a stoppage-time equaliser from substitute Nicklas Bendtner which rescued a last-gasp draw against Aston Villa.

Fabregas felt that result - dug out when everything seemed to be going against the Gunners following a difficult week in the wake of Eduardo's horrific leg injury at Birmingham - showed this squad have the mental strength needed to mount a sustained assault for the game's biggest honours.

However, for the 2006 Champions League runners-up to progress into the last eight of this season's elite European club competition, Arsenal will have to do it the hard way.

Standing in their path are the current holders, who secured a goalless draw at Emirates Stadium two weeks ago and possess a star-studded squad capable of taking any team apart - as Manchester United found out when they ventured to Italy last year.

Wenger has pledged not to give Brazilian playmaker Kaka any special treatment, other than to cut off the supply chain to the gifted 25-year-old as the Gunners did a fortnight ago in north London when the World Player of the Year had only a limited impact.

Fabregas, however, insists there will be sense of Arsenal being over-awed at their task.

Indeed, but for the width of a crossbar in stoppage-time when Emmanuel Adebayor failed to convert a close-range header at Emirates Stadium, the Gunners could have been defending a slender lead tomorrow night.

"We are young, but we are not scared of anything and we will play our game," declared 20-year-old Spaniard Fabregas.

"You have always seen if we are winning or losing, we will never go to defend.

"We will always want to attack, because it is the way we like to play and enjoy playing.

"You take the risk that sometimes you will draw or lose, of course, but we enjoy it - and any football fans should be proud there are teams like Arsenal who want to play football always, not to defend."

Fabregas added: "We are playing against Milan, a big team with a lot of medals in their pockets.

"It will be interesting to see how we respond to that.

"We will play at the San Siro for the first time, and think we can do well if we play 100% and maybe we can cause a surprise."

Arsenal have certainly been through a steep learning curve this season, with Fabregas one of several players taking up the mantle following the departure of long-time talisman Thierry Henry to Barcelona during the summer.

Nevertheless, many still consider the Gunners outsiders for the Premier League title - with United having swiftly clawed back what was a five-point deficit to just one.

Fabregas believes the past six months have left Wenger's young squad in a strong position for the run-in.

However, the midfielder knows all that hard work will be for nothing should performances levels not be maintained right through until May.

Fabregas declared: "We have always said that the most important part of the season is coming now - but if you do not do well at the beginning, there is no important part at the end.

On-form United looking for European glory

victory over Lyon will see his side equal Juventus' record in the competition of ten straight home victories in the competition.

The match is finely balanced after the first leg in France finished all square at 1-1.

United breezed past Sporting Lisbon, Dynamo Kyiv and Roma this season at home.

That gave them a firm foothold in the group stages and they finished first in style.

Asked why United are so formidable at Old Trafford in Europe against top teams, Ferguson replied: "We have been good."

He added: "Our home record in European football has been the foundation of our group successes.

"I have said it many times you need ten points to qualify. If you get three home wins it is a big help. It means you only need a point on the road.

"The atmosphere at Old Trafford helps. There is a big stimulant for the fans to come to European nights.

"The players also increase their expectation levels to do well in these games."

Lyon extended their lead at the top of the French League at the weekend when they defeated Lille in front of a record French crowd of 78,000 at the Stade de France and Ferguson expects a difficult game.

Rafa wowed by power of Babel

The winger scored his eighth goal of the season in Sunday`s 3-1 Barclays Premier League victory against Bolton.Babel was on target with a clinical finish after a bizarre own-goal from Jussi Jaaskelainen in the 11th minute.Steven Gerrard's effort was going wide but the Bolton goalkeeper inexplicably helped it into his own net with his face. There was no way back for Wanderers after that and Fabio Aurelio added a spectacular third before Tamir Cohen scored a consolation for the struggling home side.Babel could now have a more prominent role to play in the coming weeks of the season.Benitez said: "It was a good game for him against Bolton as they were looking out for Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres."It meant that Ryan had more freedom and he is the kind of player who can run behind defenders."Liverpool now entertain West Ham on Wednesday in good heart after this comfortable victory.Benitez said: "Every win is important when you are fighting for fourth place. You need to put the other teams around you under pressure and we have done that."As we have a game in hand, it depends on what we do. You do not need to see the table every day."If we can win against West Ham then we go go into the game after that with confidence."Benitez reiterated he is content at Anfield and claimed his focus was on winning matches and not his future plans.

Puyol back Catalans to recover

Barca could have gone top of the Primera Liga standings if results had gone their way on Saturday, but their defeat at the Vicente Calderon and Real Madrid's 3-2 victory at Recreative Huelva means there is now five points between the top two.Frank Rijkaard's men had been unbeaten for all 15 of their competitive matches in 2008 and they looked on course to extend that run when Ronaldinho put them ahead against Atletico with a superb overhead kick in the first half. But two quickfire goals from Atletico's Argentinian duo Sergio Aguero and Maxi Rodriguez gave the home side a scarcely-deserved half-time advantage, and Barca could find no way back in the second half."They had a good day and us a bad one," said Puyol."We had the game under control and in a five-minute spell it has escaped us. Their first goal was bad luck, the second has caused us a lot of damage and with the penalty they have broken the game."Atletico are always motivated against Barca and here they have come out very well."The changing room is hurt, but as we have shown at other times, we will move forward."Puyol's defensive partner Gabriel Milito added on his club's website: "We have played a good first half up until their equaliser."At the break we could not understand how we were losing. In the second half we have looked to draw level and ended up conceding two more goals.

Sachin wanted to change SCG statistic

Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar said India had never won a game against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground and he wanted to change that statistic in the first final of the CB Series on Sunday.

Sachin's 117 not out helped India beat Australia by six wickets in the first final and also earned him the Man of the Match award. At the end of the match, a poster read: "Sachin Cricket Ground".

"It is wonderful to end up on a winning note. I just saw that we had never won a game at the SCG and we wated to change that," he said.

Sachin also praised Rohit Sharma for a "terriffic effort".

"Rohit batted well and the partnership was crucial. Today, I batted with him for such a long time. He has a terriffic future," he added.

About his first ODI hundred in Australia, Tendulkar said: "I have been wanting to get an ODI hundred in Australia but in the last series I missed a few. Considering that this was the first final and we restricted them to 239, it was important to get the second half correct as well."

Dhoni praises Sachin ton

Indian captain MS Dhoni said it was a "pleasure" to see Sachin Tendulkar bring up his first ODI hundred in Australia, one that set up the six-wicket win in the first final of the CB Series at Sydney on Sunday.

Chasing 240 to win, India reached the target with just over four overs to spare with Tendulkar playing right through the innings to finish at 117 not out."It's always a pleasure to see him bat. He ran well, he got the boundaries and he carried the youngsters with him," Dhoni said at the post-match presentation.e wanted to prove a point, the whole team enjoyed the innings," he added.Dhoni, who brough up the winning runs with a boundary, said in hindsight losing the tossdid not matter much."We got the wickets at the crucial time and Harbhajan and Piyush Chawla bowled very well. Australia were at one stage looking to score over 300, but it's good that we were able to contain them," he said, adding that they had to concentrate on the next game at Brisbane.

Meanwhile, losing captain Ricky Ponting said his team had put in a "sloppy" performance.

"It was a sloppy performance not only from the batsmen but from the bowlers as well. And Sachin just got into the groove for India,

However, the other four Indians -- the Bhambri sisters, Ankita and Saana, Rushmi Chakravarthi and Akshitha Basavaraju -- were outplayed by better placed foreign rivals.

Saana did her best in extending her Austrian rival Monique Adamczak in the match that went the full distance, while her other three compatriots lost out in straight sets.
